Cindy O'Shea - SPCM Cert in Christian Studies
I was encouraged to join the Certificate in Christian Studies by my Rector and Dean, in preparation to become a Diocesan Lay Reader. I am greatly challanged by the course and it inspires me to explore and deepen my faith and 'live it out' at a gut level in my everyday life. I finished my BScEd in 1981 so perhaps the biggest challenge is time management, writing and studying again after being out of full time education for thirty years.
Catherine Ryan - Cert in Adult Guidance, Theory & Practice
This course became the stepping stone to another stage in my life, both personally and professionally. As one would say ‘It was the makings of me!’ I grew in leaps and bounds, as I realised that on my journey through the course I recognised the skills I already had gained from my own life work experiences. Now I could identify with the Career /Counselling Theories, developing a new language to express myself in a more confident and professional way, I now had many new tools to use in my practise.Continuing my studies I successfully completed the Diploma in Arts, Adult Guidance and Counselling Course at N.U.I. Maynooth and graduate as an Adult Guidance Counsellor during this time I completed Level A and Level B Psychometric Assessments .Now I am a member of the Irish Guidance Counsellors and registered with the British Psychological Society.Today I practise from home where 90% of my referrals are word of mouth.
So as you can see I can highly recommend this course
Niamh Carroll - Modular Cert in Culture & Society
I completed the Modular Certificate in Culture and Society last May. I found this course an excellent stepping stone into the BA in Community Studies as you get a real feel of what the Degree programme entails. I have to say I found the college to have admirable facilities for the adult students that it caters for. It also offers an essential support system from the college staff and fellow students alike, which allows the adult learner to develop. I would not hesitate to recommend the Modular Cert to anyone who is considering a return to education.
Pat Tynan - BA (Local Studies) / H.Dip (Education)
The BA offered by the NUIM Kilkenny Campus offered me the opportunity to achieve a degree. For one who did not have the opportunity to go on to University this course opened a door that had seemed to be permanently closed. I found the whole course to be a tremendous experience and it also offered me the opportunity to continue with my studies.
After completing the BA course I went on to complete my H. Dip. in Education in Maynooth, and this allowed me to enter the teaching profession. I am now teaching in Castlecomer Community School in Co. Kilkenny. It also gave me the opportunity to teach in the adult education sector with the VEC in Kilkenny.
So for me the course was very successful and has offered me exciting, challenging and rewarding new career opportunities.
May outreach campuses grow in strength and prosperity!
Keep up the good work.
Marilyn Castle - NUI Cert. in Creative Writing for Publication
As a new entrant to The Creative Writing Course (Kilkenny Campus) in 2010, I presumed we would be fed volumes of work in a ‘formal setting’ plus expected to be given the winning formula for producing quality work for publication. It was a pleasure to find the opposite. Workshops and lectures are professionally structured yet wonderfully informal. I speak for our whole group here in saying we have been inspired, nurtured and guided to reach set targets in each module all the while expanding our knowledge, exploring our individual talents and unwittingly, ourselves. Fabulous course!
Phyllis Mahfoud - American Literature Short Course
The short story works of John Cheever, Tobias Wolff and Flannery O'Connor among others, whetted the appetite. The American Literature Course encourages discussion in a relaxed atmosphere. The first Course was enlightening and enjoyable. Highly recommended for enthusiasts of the genre.
Annette Ashe - Certificate in Counselling Skills
Theory, research and practice all combine to give this course a rich tapestry. From a personal point of view I learned so much about myself, about others as well as about those early 'counsellors' who have influenced or rather informed our thinking today (Freud etc). I would highly recommend the course to anyone wishing to learn more about themselves or those around them but even more than this - anyone interested in gaining an insight or introduction to counselling and perhaps a chance to take it further.
Mary White - NUI Cert in Spanish
From day one our tutor brought us through this Spanish course with great skill, energy and patience. We got a great grounding in the language, and I can't believe how much we learned in one year .
We also got a whistle-stop tour of the history and cultures of Spain and Latin America including the art which I particularly loved .
The course was expensive but we covered in one year what other courses cover in two. It was "intensivo" but we had fun too.
Sandra Kazlauskaite - BA (Community Studies)
My experience of studying as an adult student has been a very interesting and fulfilling journey. During these years I have met many wonderful people with different experiences, which we have shared with each other and learned from. We as adult learners bring our life experience and previous knowledge into the course, and we learn how to combine this experience with academic knowledge. The Community Studies programme is very well designed to suit adult students. The range of modules available gave me the opportunity to pick specific modules which interest me. The lectures always were open for debate, and everyone’s knowledge and experience was listened to. In many ways this learning experience has changed my life.
Jonathon Fisher - Teastas Eorpach na Gaeilge (TEG)
I was last in an Irish class about fifty years ago and, naturally enough, was a bit apprehensive about starting again. I shouldn't have worried; the TEG class is relaxed, informative and good fun even though it also requires a bit of real work on my part. Overall, the experience is go hiontach !
