The pioneering role of NUI Maynooth in broadening the horizons of adult education in Ireland is widely recognised. A milestone in recent years was the development of a new initiative in 1997 - the establishment of the University's first Outreach Campus at St. Kieran's College in Kilkenny under the aegis of the Department of Adult and Community Education, NUI Maynooth. The Campus provides a range of courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level for adult students from Kilkenny and the Southeast. Facilities include state-of-the-art library facilities networked to the parent campus and a video-conferencing suite, which allows for interactive, distance delivery, as well as classrooms and a student canteen.
Great emphasis has been placed on ensuring that the Campus commands a high level of local ownership. A locally representative Steering Committee is in place to foster local engagement with the Campus, local relevance and local support.
